Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2026. Bandai Namco's latest official preview confirms the return of Annihilation Battle, a mission format built around target choice, resupply timing and large groups of enemy facilities.

How Annihilation Battle works

Annihilation Battle asks players to destroy enemy forces and facilities within a time limit. The revealed mission includes a solar power plant, oil tanks, an air base and an ammunition dump. Instead of prescribing one fixed route, the mode lets players decide which targets to attack first and when to leave the combat area temporarily to reload weapons at a return line.

Producer Manabu Shimomoto describes this freedom as central to Ace Combat: pilots eliminate enemies according to their own judgment. That makes weapon use and route planning part of the mission rather than a simple sequence of scripted objectives. The preview identifies the showcased operation as Mission 7.

Destruction changes target priorities

Ace Combat 8 adds chain destruction to Annihilation Battles. Hitting a flammable target such as an oil tank can trigger an explosion that destroys nearby buildings. Structures close to the crash site of a downed aircraft may also be damaged.

These interactions give players another reason to consider attack order. A well-chosen target could remove several structures at once, while returning for ammunition at the wrong moment could reduce the time available to exploit a chain reaction. The official announcement does not specify how scoring or mission rankings will reward these choices.

Campaign threats shown in the trailer

The story trailer moves between life aboard The Endurance and the conflict facing the Federation of Central Usea. It shows the Joker Flight, led by the Wings of Theve, confronting Shadow 22 of the Elite Sotoan Air Force Shadows Unit.

Two large threats also receive detailed introductions. Megafloat Fatsia is a six-kilometer artificial island used as an arms factory and military supply station, protected by automated defenses, aircraft and unmanned systems. Tonitrus Spear is a low-orbit kinetic weapon that attacks with dense metal rods and forces pilots to evade strikes from above.

Release date and confirmed platform

The official PlayStation article confirms an October 2, 2026 release on PS5. It also advertises a Deluxe Edition with early access and additional preorder bonuses. The announcement focuses on PlayStation players and does not provide a complete platform comparison, pricing breakdown or detailed early-access schedule.

For returning players, the main confirmed change is clear: Annihilation Battle keeps its open target selection while adding environmental chain destruction that can affect how each attack is planned.
