If you own Nintendo Switch games, you may already have some of the best Switch 2 upgrades without paying again. Older games fall into three different categories: titles that simply work through backward compatibility, games with free Switch 2 improvements, and games offering additional paid Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrades.

The differences are worth understanding in October 2026. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe gained major free enhancements in September and received another Switch 2-specific fix on October 13. Pikmin 3 Deluxe joined Nintendo's free-update catalogue in August. Here's how to get the benefits without spending money unnecessarily.

Free compatibility update or paid Switch 2 Edition?

Type Additional purchase needed? What it gives you
Backward-compatible Switch game No, if you own it Runs on Switch 2; extra improvements aren't guaranteed
Free Switch 2 update No upgrade charge Game-specific improvements to visuals, controls or multiplayer
Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack Usually yes, for existing owners Separate enhancements or extra content, depending on the game

Nintendo confirms that Switch 2 supports many existing physical cartridges and digital purchases, although some titles remain incompatible or only partially supported. Its official free-update list is distinct from the Edition upgrade program.

Don't assume every old game runs at a higher frame rate just because the console is faster. Check the individual title's update notes and the Nintendo compatibility checker before spending money.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has a particularly big free upgrade

The headline example is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which received version 4.0.0 on September 1, 2026. On Switch 2, the update added sharper visuals, shorter loading times, CameraPlay and five-to-eight-player local multiplayer on one console.

Eight-player play requires enough compatible controllers. Nintendo specifies that at least one Joy-Con 2 or Switch 2 Pro Controller is necessary when playing with eight people. CameraPlay is a different feature: it requires a compatible USB camera and works with two to four players, with additional requirements for its online use.

More recently, Nintendo's Mario Kart 8 Deluxe update history lists version 4.0.1 released October 13, 2026. It resolves Switch 2 issues involving unexpected extra item boxes or obstacles, two-player user selection, missing Star Bits on Wii Rainbow Road and a game crash.

In other words, September delivered the new features; October repaired several issues. Neither is a paid Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade.

Other Switch games that improve for free

The current Nintendo catalogue identifies several familiar games, each with its own features:

  • Pikmin 3 Deluxe — August 31, 2026: better image quality and two-player Bingo Battle through GameShare.
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons — January 15, 2026: clearer visuals on Switch 2. This is different from the optional paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade.
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns HD — January 20, 2026: visual improvements and local two-player GameShare.
  • Pokémon Scarlet and Violet — upgraded image quality and smoother frame-rate behavior from their earlier free Switch 2 updates.
  • Super Mario Odyssey — optimized visuals, HDR and two-player GameShare with Cappy.
  • Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury — smoother presentation, selected HDR support and GameShare.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and Echoes of Wisdom — improved visuals and HDR support on compatible displays.
  • Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 — improved image quality and Joy-Con 2 mouse-control support.
  • Splatoon 3 — visual refinements and smoother motion in specified hub areas.

GameShare is not universal: the game, the sending console and sometimes the recipient's online setup affect availability. Similarly, “optimized visuals” is not a promise of 4K or 60 fps for every title.

Which upgrades still cost money?

Some older games have separate Nintendo Switch 2 Editions. For an owner of the original, Nintendo may offer a paid upgrade pack containing additional content or enhanced features.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons illustrates why the distinction matters. Its free 2026 visual update is one thing; the Switch 2 Edition adds a separate set of features. Nintendo explained both in its official announcement trailer. The original game remains required when purchasing the upgrade pack as an existing owner.

The most sensible approach is to launch your existing game and download its free patch first. Then compare the specific Edition feature list with what you already get. Don't buy an upgrade pack because a store banner makes it sound mandatory for compatibility.

How to check and update your Switch games

  1. Connect Switch 2 to the internet and install the latest system update.
  2. Check the exact title in Nintendo's compatibility database or its Nintendo eShop listing.
  3. Highlight the game on HOME, press + or −, then choose Software Update → Via the Internet.
  4. Launch it and check whether its new features need additional accessories, controllers or connectivity.
  5. If a paid Edition is offered, compare its features separately before purchasing.

The official Switch 2 transfer guide explains how purchased digital games can be downloaded again following system transfer. Compatible original Switch cartridges also remain usable, although some titles require older Joy-Con controllers for particular interactions.

What about saves, cartridges and microSD cards?

Game compatibility and storage are separate questions. You do not need a new cartridge just because an old compatible game receives a free update. Save data generally lives on the console, not inside the game cartridge.

Switch 2 uses microSD Express for expanded game storage, not ordinary Switch 1 microSD cards. Nintendo's storage FAQ also confirms that game saves stay in internal system memory.

If you are switching consoles, plan storage and save transfer separately rather than treating the old SD card as a plug-and-play migration method.

What should you play first?

Already own Mario Kart 8 Deluxe? Its free 2026 features make it an obvious first test, particularly for groups. For a quieter visual check, try Pikmin 3 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey or Link's Awakening. For families, see which GameShare-enabled games support the number of players you want.

Bottom line: most players should check compatibility and apply free updates before paying for an Edition pack. Nintendo's catalogue is still evolving in 2026, so the official list remains the best bookmark.
